چکیده
Atypical hemolytic syndrome is an extremely rare, life threatening, progressive disease. Approximately one to two cases per million are seen annually in the US. It is known to be associated with variety of conditions including infections, drugs, autoimmune conditions, vaccination, malignancy, organ transplantation, pregnancy, and metabolic conditions. We hereby describe a case of atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome associated with CABG surgery. A 58 year old female presented to the emergency department (ED) with three days of worsening shortness of breath and cold like symptoms including nausea, vomiting and rhinorrhea. Twenty six days prior to presentation she had undergone Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG) for three vessel disease. The physical examination was unremarkable. Labs showed anemia, acute renal injury and thrombocytopenia. A peripheral smear demonstrated over 10 per high-power field of schistocytes. She was presumptively diagnosed with Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (TTP) and started on plasmapheresis. ADAMSTS-13 was normal and autoimmune workup was negative. After an extensive workup she was diagnosed with Atypical Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (aHUS). To our knowledge this is the first case of aHUS associated with CABG. In fact, there has been only one other case of aHUS related to cardiac surgery which was found in a child who underwent Tetralogy of Fallot repair.

Concurrent Atypical Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome and Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia: a case report
Background: Atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS) is a life-threatening and scarce disorder characterized by acute renal failure and disease, non-immune microangiopathic hemolytic anemia and thrombocytopenia, leading to end-stage renal failure or death, and consequently maybe accompanying by extra renal manifestations. Case report: We reported aHUS accompanied by autoimmune hemolytic anemi...

BACKGROUND Hemolytic uremic syndrome is a common cause of acute kidney injury in children. In children, hemolytic uremic syndrome is most commonly associated with gastrointestinal infections caused by Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli or other enteric organisms. Although less common, atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome is triggered by multiple factors and portends a significantly worse prog...

BACKGROUND Atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome is a rare disorder which is known to cause acute thrombotic microangiopathy during pregnancy with poor maternal and fetal outcomes. Atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome is caused mostly by dysregulation of alternative complement pathway secondary to genetic mutations. Most of the cases reported have been in the post-partum period. We report a rare cas...

Atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) is a rare disorder in children, therefore it may lead to misdiagnosis, delay in treatment, or acute kidney injury. Patients with atypical HUS present signs and symptoms of hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia, and higher lactate dehydrogenase and uric acid levels. The main risk factor highlighted is consanguinity, gene mutations, and viral infections. Ecul...

Atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS) associated with membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis (MPGN) is an uncommon clinical presentation, especially in children. We report a 8-year-old-boy who presented like aHUS but the kidney biopsy showed MPGN type 1.
